there is a day in winter every year
that is the coldest, bleakest day we've seen
we greet the day like any other, yet --
some months after the sun's withheld her face
for the longest time, as if she too is tired
and earth has gradually gotten colder
what leaves remain are crispy with the frosts
the mud freezes and the sky is wet
-- at some point, without us even knowing,
we have survived the coldest day of the year
and things will start to ease and warm again
daily, even if only by a little.
and one of my favourite songs about the cold...
